Join us for a special Family Day at Asia Society, where art, culture, and creativity come together for all ages. As part of our beloved Family Day series — and in celebration of Asia Society’s 70th anniversary — families are invited to explore hands-on arts and crafts inspired by Asian cultures throughout the building.
Children and caregivers can move from space to space discovering creative activities that reflect the richness and diversity of Asia, from traditional techniques to contemporary interpretations. Along the way, families will learn, make, and celebrate together, honoring seven decades of Asia Society’s commitment to fostering cross-cultural understanding.
This joyful, interactive day is designed to spark curiosity, imagination, and connection—perfect for families looking to learn through play while celebrating a milestone moment in Asia Society’s history.
Get ready to embark on an unforgettable cross-continental adventure! Every young explorer will be issued an official Asia Society Passport, which serves as their personal guide through the vibrant cultures of Asia. As children visit each station, they can collect stamps and document their "travels," making their cultural journey official! Activities will include:
- India: Craft a Festive Toran – Bring good luck home! Children will assemble colorful, auspicious door hangings inspired by vibrant Indian festivals, perfect for welcoming friends and family.
- Indonesia: Bring Shadow Puppets to Life – Step into the spotlight! Discover the magic of Wayang Kulit by crafting intricate puppets and learning how to tell legendary stories through movement and light.
- Iran: Piece Together a Coaster Mosaic – Become a geometric genius! Inspired by the breathtaking tilework of Persian architecture, kids can arrange dazzling patterns to create their own mosaic masterpiece.
- Korea: Jam with a Pellet Drum – Make some noise! Explorers will build and customize their own Sogo or pellet drums, then test out the rhythmic beats that have filled Korean celebrations for centuries.
- Myanmar (Burma): Meet the Pyit Taing Htaung – Build a "never-fall" friend! These iconic, colorful tumbling toys represent resilience and joy—no matter how many times you knock them over, they always land on their feet.
The Adventure Continues
To keep the creativity flowing long after the event ends, children will receive a special edition canvas bag to carry their treasures. This take-home kit includes:
- The Chinese Fan Kit – Everything needed to design their own traditional fan at home.
- Japanese Origami Supplies – A collection of colorful papers so they can practice folds and mastering new shapes.
This bag ensures that the spirit of the journey — and their handmade masterpieces — makes it home safely for further discovery!
Community Masterpiece: The Great Mandala
Step into a world of harmony and color with our Communal Mandala Art project! Rooted in ancient Buddhist and Hindu traditions, the mandala represents unity and the universe. Every child becomes a vital part of this grand design, contributing their own unique colors and patterns to a massive, shared work of art. It is a beautiful way for young artists to see how their individual creativity connects with others to create something spectacular.
